Prosser Debate Team

Coaches: Ms. Perez and Mr. Alejandre

Meeting Location: Room 301

Day and Time: Every Friday from 3:15-5:15

Description: Prosser Debate Team focuses on policy debate, where students are involved in doing research on modern day issues. Students offer solutions, plans, rebuttals and evidence in order to support their argument. Additionally, Prosser Debate Team is a space for students to have fun! Each meeting we do ice-breakers, community-building exercises, and informal debates.

Skills: While participating in debate, Prosser students practice their speaking skills, preparing them for multiple opportunities post high school. Students also improve their research skills, learning how to find reliable information to back up their arguments. Lastly, students improve their confidence and communication skills.

Benefits of Debate: Students have shared that one of the benefits of Debate is building friendships with other Prosser students. Currently, the Debate Team is an equal mix of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students also get to take leadership roles by being a part of the Debate E-Board. We have students serve as president, vice-president, treasurer, and secretary of the club. Together, the E-Board helps build Debate by running meetings, promoting our club, keeping track of our budget, and taking minutes of all the meetings.

Competitions: Prosser Debate Team is part of Chicago Debates, and, each month, we compete against other CPS high schools. Students compete in teams of two, and Prosser has seven competing teams. So far, the Prosser Debate Team has won 23 awards and we are just one of four schools in our division to qualify for City Championships 2023 at Northwestern University.
