10TH GRADE CHEMISTRY

Welcome to Chemistry! Chemistry studies matter (stuff) and how we change it into different states or new substances. A key to understanding chemistry is recognizing that all matter is made of extremely small particles we call atoms. Chemistry is a basic science that will help you understand biology and astronomy.

What are the types of things we will learn about?

  1. Why is it a bad idea to wear a metal coat in winter?
  2. What is energy and why is it “conserved?”
  3. Why do things rust more in Chicago than elsewhere?
  4. How does lead make us sick?

Tentative Course Outline:

Semester 1

  • Energy and Scientific Measurement
  • Structure and Properties of Matter
  • Atomic Structure and Electrons in Atoms
  • Periodic Table/Periodic Properties
  • Behavior of Gases

Semester 2

  • Ionic and Covalent Bonding
  • Chemical Names and Formulas Stoichiometry
  • Water and Aqueous systems
