Homework Policy
Prosser Career Academy expects its students to do homework every night. The purpose
is to reinforce, practice, and enrich what has been taught in the classroom.
This homework may include reading, writing, reviewing previously learned material,
memorizing, researching, observing, collecting information, interviewing, experimenting
and/or exploring.
The Chicago Board of Education has recommended that each high school student
spend a minimum of 150 minutes doing homework every night. As a student, you
should always know the homework assignment, how it is to be done, when it is
due, how long it will take to complete it, and if you have the necessary materials
to complete the task. When you complete the work, you should carefully check
for errors and/or any missing material and return it to school on the day when
it is due.
Your parents and brothers, sisters, and friends can and should help you with
your homework. If you do not understand the assignment, seek help from your teacher
immediately. If you need further assistance, tutoring services are available
to you. Remember, you are responsible for all homework assignments given to you!
EIGHTEEN KEYS FOR GOOD STUDY HABITS (source unknown)
- RECOGNIZE WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW - Uncover your own needs. When you fail to
understand, say so. Don't be ashamed of your limitations.
- ASK QUESTIONS - Ask your teacher and competent classmates. Ask questions
in class and outside.
- BE YOUR OWN BOSS - Take over the running of your own life. Don't wait
to be told when you need to work.
- BE CONFIDENT - Tell yourself that you can do the work. You are capable
of more than you realize.
- GIVE YOURSELF GOOD STUDY CONDITIONS - Find a place where you can be quiet,
comfortable, undisturbed, neat. And well lit.
- KEEP YOUR SUPPLY OF EQUIPMENT IN GOOD ORDER - Have everything
you will need at hand where you can find it?
- DISCOVER WHEN YOU WORK BEST - Do your hardest work when your energy
and attention are at their peak.
- WORK WITHIN TIME LIMIT - Begin promptly and finish as soon
as you can. Doing well does not depend upon time alone.
- GET YOUR WORK DONE ON TIME - Make out a study schedule for yourself.
If you fall behind, you will generally stay there.
- USE LIBRARIES INTELLIGENTLY - Learn how to use card catalogues.
Ask librarians to help you. Know the reference books at your disposal.
- LEARN HOW TO TAKE NOTES - Make your notes reminders, not complete
records. Omit unnecessary material.
- LEARN TO PLAN AND ORGANIZE A PAPER - Find the most satisfactory
method of outlining.
- INCREASE YOUR VOCABULARY - Listen to people as they use
words. Pick up words from your reading. Own your own dictionary.
- LEARN BY PRACTICE TO READ FASTER.
- TRAIN YOUR MEMORY - Remember that you can always improve
your memory by exercising it.
- BE SENSIBLE ABOUT EXAMINATIONS - See examinations for what they
are and approach them as calmly as you can.
- LEARN TO STUDY SOMETHING BY YOURSELF - Find the value and the
pleasure of learning something new by means of books, people, and the world around you.
- DEVELOP OUTSIDE INTERESTS - No one can study all the time. Success
in study often results from achievement in other activities.
Students complying with the above have the foundation for a superior education and successful completion of a class work.
